On Loving Your Sport
With snow on the horizon (fingers crossed), it is the exact time of year that I find myself realizing how much I can't wait to bring out the skis and get out there. It's situations such as this that cause me to realize how much I am in love with the sport, and how enjoyable it is just to be on snow and getting hyped for some races.
I would say I am a strong believer in the idea that skiing is a lifelong sport. I was skiing long before I started racing, and I hope to be skiing long after that. The phrase "lifelong sport" gets thrown around a lot with reference to skiing, though I would go so far as to say that this goes for any activity or sport out there (okay, maybe not football). I guess in many ways, sport is almost like a part of culture, yes there is a distinct culture surrounding each sport or game, but I mean that sport is a part of our life that we can engage in and enjoy doing.
The whole reason I began ski racing was because I realised that I really enjoy skiing and I wanted to do it more. Now, faced with decisions about my plans for the future (as everybody inevitably is), I have been prompted to reflect on what sport and skiing mean to me. In doing so, I have remembered how much I have grown across the years I have been out having fun on snow. I hope here to speak to my beginnings in skiing, and how what has lead me through my journey thus far has ultimately stemmed from my love of being on snow.
I do want to be clear here and say that this is not anything against racing and that it distracts from this enjoyment. I am completely of the opposite opinion, that racing only enhances skiing, giving it structure. In sense, the whole idea of pushing yourself to the max adds a whole other dimension to it, one that is incredibly exciting, fun, and rewarding.
On that note, it would suffice to say that it was nice to look back, while I am also looking forward to the upcoming race season. Can't wait until the snow flies!
Honourable mention to Mattias for sharing the picture and for making skiing that much more awesome by his continued involvement.
